Stephen Esper, MD, MBA

I am Stephen Esper.  A Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist who practices at UPMC Hospital System in Pittsburgh.  I am also a musician, sports-broadcaster/journalist, and enjoy seeing other countries.  An Orthodox Christian, I am a Byzantine Chanter and direct our choir at St. George Cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA.  I can speak on two topics:

First:  Over the past several years, I was asked by my alumni association to speak to high school, college, and graduate students regarding careers in healthcare.  This gave me the opportunity to engage in a thought-provoking discussion that did not just involve healthcare directly, but all life and experiences, both within and outside the boundaries of medicine or any other career.

Through a series of examples, life experiences, and messages throughout our discussions, together, the audience and I develop the themes of humility, compassion and love.  I have tailored my discussions to the audience.  My thoughts are not only informed by life experience but also by the scriptures and homilies of the Holy Fathers, depending on the audience.  At the same time, if the audience is more secular, I will not speak directly about The Lord, and the Divine is never brought up directly (unless I am asked a question about my relationship with God).  I have seen, from other talks that people give, that this is a sure turn off for the younger generation these days, people who are looking for honesty, hope, to fill a void, and don’t understand Who actually fills it.  And perhaps this is the first step for them to a much larger World.

I have found that the message and its delivery have significantly resonated with the students, graduate students, and younger professionals.  I am very straightforward, honest, and blunt.  I answer all questions directly, personal or otherwise.

Second:  I am a trained Byzantine Chanter.  I am well-versed in the hymnology of the Church, as well as the meanings of the hymns and services, each part, the significance and origin.  All the Orthodox Church Theology is within the hymns.  I think the best Sunday School lessons exist in Vespers and Orthros.  It is my joy to share the wealth of theology in the hymns, and how it relates to our life, how to not simply attend Liturgy, but to live it everyday.
